The EU ETS revision proposes a new Sustainable Maritime Alternative Propulsion mechanism (SMAP), reserving up to 110 million allowances to support sustainable maritime fuels and zero-emission propulsion. This article explains how the mechanism could reduce fuel cost gaps, which fuels and technologies may qualify, and what the proposed funding rules mean for shipping companies.
