Collaborative Report Explores Strategic Role of Ports in Maritime Decarbonization.
BetterSea is proud to announce that our co-founder, Maximilian Schroer, has contributed to a seminal report titled “Ports as Energy Transition Hubs: An Exploratory Study.” This collaborative effort, led by Copenhagen Business School’s CBS Maritime and the Copenhagen School of Energy Infrastructure (CSEI), with participation from the Technical University of Denmark’s Maritime DTU, delves into the evolving role of ports in the global energy transition.
The 103-page report offers a transdisciplinary inquiry into how ports can serve as pivotal nodes in the shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. Rather than providing exhaustive documentation, the study focuses on identifying knowledge gaps, formulating challenges, and developing new scholarly approaches to address them. Key themes include:
Infrastructure Requirements: Assessing the needs for alternative fuels, bunker consumption, and the dynamics of shipping markets.
Integration of Digital Technologies: Exploring how technological advancements can optimize energy use in port operations.
Governance and Business Models: Investigating strategic and governance challenges, and identifying business model opportunities for ports in the clean energy transition.
Schroer's contribution underscores BetterSea's commitment to advancing sustainable maritime practices through research and innovation. By participating in this study, BetterSea aims to support the strategic planning necessary for ports to effectively contribute to and benefit from the clean energy transition.
